The Gatsby Benchmarks are:

The Gatsby Benchmarks are:

1. A stable career programme

2. Learning from career and labour market information

3. Addressing the needs of each pupil

4. Linking curriculum learning to careers

5. Encounters with employers and employees

6. Experiences of workplaces

7. Encounters with further and higher education

8. Personal guidance

To help us to achieve the Benchmarks and to ensure we provide a Careers Related Programme that meets all our statutory requirements.

We work closely with local further education colleges, local employers, Independent Training Advisers and Careers Professionals.

We also have our own Level 6 Qualified Careers Adviser who works with students giving them the information, guidance and support they require throughout their careers journey.

Our Careers Adviser is Louisa McHardy and she can be contacted with the link below:

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A CAREERS INTERVIEW

Our Careers Adviser gives one to one careers interviews to students that may need support and she routinely interviews students in 10 and 11, to ensure they have the required information to allow them to make informed decisions about their future career path.

We have included a useful video explaining what to expect and how to prepare for a Careers Development and Guidance interview.

Careers Hub

We work closely with the Careers Hub and Careers and Enterprise Company.  We are lucky to have an Enterprise Co-ordinator and a business volunteer who helps us to continue to develop our careers programme.

They also help us to ensure that we are not only measuring our achievement of the Gatsby Benchmarks but also that our Careers Related Programme is having impact – to do this we use a benchmark tool called Compass+ which allows us to evaluate our careers activity against the Gatsby Benchmarks.

We can also use this tool to record, identify and analyse the destination data of our Year 11 students.   We can use the tool to review if they went on to study A Levels, Level 2 and 3 vocational qualifications or apprenticeships and employment.

POST 16 CHOICES

Year 9 Options

At Fowey River Academy we encourage our students to study a broad and balanced curriculum which will prepare them for their next steps into College, apprenticeships and employment.

It is important that students have the relevant information to ensure they are choosing the options which are the right ones for them; and they should consider what they choose now will be the subjects they will study for the next two years and will inform the choices they make for their study at post 16.

We have included some useful information and links here for both students and parents.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work Experience

Every Year our Year 10 students have the opportunity to undertake a week of work experience.  The aim of this week is to give each student the opportunity to experience the world of work and what this entails.  It helps out students to see what skills they may require in the workplace, and is good preparation for their futures.

Labour Market Information

It is always important for when considering future careers that you are aware of what is happening in the labour market both locally, nationally and internationally.  This information allows you to see trends in the job market including those industries which are growing and those that are declining.  We have included some useful links below which includes the ten growth sectors for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

EMPLOYERS - WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We are always on the look out to expand our network of local employers who can give up some time to come into school to help inspire and support our students through their career journey.  We are always happy to welcome local employers into school to help broaden the minds of our students by sharing your experiences and expertise; and allowing us to make important community links in our local area.

Local employers can help support us in areas such as

  • Mock Interviews

  • Talks based in your industry or job role

  • Work shop activities relating to your job role

  • Discussions about future pathways and apprenticeships

  • Discussions on barriers in the work place such as gender stereotyping and disability

  • Careers in the curriculum – giving a talk on how your job links to a certain subject area

  • Offer a work experience placement to one of our students
